Proper hydration is key to healthy hair and long, strong strands. Drinking enough water each day helps your body function well, which includes keeping your circulatory system regulated. This system helps stimulate hair growth and keeps hair shiny and healthy. When you do not drink enough water throughout the day, your hair can eventually become dry and brittle.
This is compounded by the fact your hair’s outer cuticle becomes more prone to breakage as you age because of a decrease in keratin levels. Your hair growth can also slow significantly after age 40. By increasing your water intake, you can help keep your hair stronger and increase circulation to your scalp to nourish those follicles and promote hair growth.
Not a big fan of water? Here are some foods you can include in your diet that can also help deliver healthy hydration to your locks.
Cucumbers are a whopping 95% water, which means they are one of the most hydrating foods around! You can find vitamin K and magnesium as well, which can give your body an added nutrient boost. Cucumbers are low-calorie and can be used in a variety of different ways including as a topping for salads or in water as a “spa water”.
Just a 1-cup serving of watermelon gives your body an added half a cup of water! Watermelon is made up of 92% water and is a low-calorie, healthy addition to any diet. To help you get the hydration you need, you can cut up some fresh watermelon cubes and eat it as a snack or dessert after a meal.
Good ol’ lettuce is another great addition for extra hydration, coming in at 96% water composition. Instead of pounding water throughout the day, you can opt for a healthy salad with your favorite lettuce topped with your favorite veggies for an H2O boost.
While your hair does change after 40, there are many ways you can keep your tresses healthy, strong and shiny including staying hydrated!
