As we celebrate the first anniversary of Better Not Younger on March 8th, I wanted to take the opportunity to share a few of the lessons I learned in this first year for anyone in their 40s, 50s or beyond who might be considering starting a second career.

Understanding how hormones work has brought validation to the female experience. But there's still a lot we've missed by centering the conversation narrowly on our reproductive health. The reality is that every adjustment we find ourselves making to our beauty routine indicates something our hormones can teach us.

As kids and teenagers we love the idea of getting older. We have an idealized, glamourized vision of what being a grown up looks like. But after we hit our 20s that all goes out of the window. As women, we all know how much pressure we feel to look younger given how little society allows us to age.

Is it just us, or is aging really having a moment? Well, it’s actually more of a movement. The conversations around aging are in the midst of a much-needed update as older women are owning their power past 40. Headlines are shifting.

Aging is a fact of life—one that brings different types of change. But when it comes to our aging hair, we all share a commonality: Delicate, dry tresses that are prone to breakage and thinning.

Here at Better Not Younger we believe change is a beautiful part of life. There are so many benefits that our older age brings—like a wisdom and confidence that our 20-year-old selves could never begin to imagine.

It is these very gifts of time that inspired our founder, Sonsoles Gonzalez, to develop the first and only hair-care brand for women over 40!

Have you ever thought about new hobbies that you would like to explore? I’ve always had a passion for food. To be more precise, the eating of food. I am well known for being the first to try out the new restaurant in town and the always-in-attendance guest at any friends or family events that involve food.

Sometimes I wake up and think I am crazy for starting Better Not Younger, but this is important to me for so many reasons. The bigger mission is about remembering and reinforcing that age can’t stop us. It’s about remembering that we as women become more powerful as we age.

Most of us are probably familiar with the well-known and proven fact that “healthy hair comes from within”, meaning that a balanced diet is a big factor in keeping hair healthy and shiny. But in our 40s, when our hair texture and density change so much, does this still hold true? If so, which are the best foods to help our thinning, more brittle, yet still much-loved tresses? Here are the answers to these questions.

In my many years working in the beauty industry, there was an accepted hierarchy to the different body features and product categories. This related to how consumers valued their body features. Working in hair care, we recognized our products were hand in hand with facial skin care, but we found an analogy that always resonated: your hair is like a frame around a picture.
